Research and Development Vessel “Spirit of Pawtucket” to Begin Its Work

Pawtucket, RI  – The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council will launchThe Spirit of Pawtucket on Monday October 17 at 11 am from Festival Pier in Pawtucket .

The Spirit of Pawtucket, a 6-passenger research and development vessel, is being launched with the purpose of promoting the environmental and economic life on the Pawtucket River and upper Narragansett Bay.

“The Spirit will be used to educate government leaders, business leaders and scientists about the opportunities to bring back the Pawtucket River to environmental and economic health,” according to Robert Billington, President of the Tourism Council.  Tourism Council staff re-built the vessel, donated by a Blackstone Valley family, over the last year.

Mayor Donald R. Grebien will assist in the  formal  launch on the Spirit of Pawtucket and will participate in its inaugural tour of the Pawtucket River on October 17.  The Tourism Council has been working on the Pawtucket Riverfront since 1990 with the inauguration of glass-bottom river tours operated by Capt. Luther Blount of Blount Marine.

“The Tourism Council is hoping to increase cooperative riverfront developments with Pawtucket, East Providence and Providence.  “With the new soccer stadium under construction and new development along the East Providence waterfront, we want to be ready to assist with the Spirit of Pawtucket when asked.  We have so much to gain in upper Narragansett Bay, working with the river as the central resource” said Billington.
